6,346 guitar players in Wroclaw - Poland Decimates Previous World Record for "Largest Guitar Ensemble"

May 1, 2009 saw 6,346 guitar players join together to play the Jimi Hendrix hit "Hey Joe" and more than tripled the standing record for "Largest Guitar Ensemble" of 2,052 set last year in Concord, California. The event took place in the historic center of Wroclaw, Poland - a city which has taken on the title of "Wroclaw Guitar City" - a title that seems merited. In fact, the Mayor, Rafał Dutkiewicz, was among those playing, as was Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse and festival founder and director, Leszek Cichoński. Cichoński is a well-known musician and music educator in Poland and the festival was an outgrowth of one of his educational programs and has taken place - and grown - annually since 2003. Beyond the 6,346 guitar players, there were thousands of spectators and supporters in the Wrocław city center as well as other guitar players taking part online and in coordinated events in Sweden,

the US, Canada and Australia (though those do not count towards the record). One of the objectives of the organizers is to establish May 1st as "World Guitar Day" and more coordinated simultaneous events are planed for next year and beyond.

Now it is the German's turn as they make their attempt on May 10th in Mainz.

THANKS JIMI FESTIVAL 2009 - Wroclaw, Poland

Deep Purple’s Steve Morse joins Poland’s “Thanks Jimi Festival” to help set New World Record for Most Guitar Players Playing Together.

Founded in 2003 by Polish guitarist Leszek Cichonski in tribute to Jimi Hendrix, and an annual event since, the "Thanks Jimi Festival" takes place in the Rynek (Old Town Square) of the beautiful medieval city of Wroclaw,
Poland.

2009 marks the 7th annual “Thanks Jimi Festival”, a worldwide movment to establish May 1st as “World Guitar Day”. Each year the festival attracts guitar players from around the world who gather to celebra
te the legacy and inspiration of Jimi Hendrix. It is a free, open-air event featuring top Polish music stars and notable international guests. The climax of the event is an attempt to set Guinness World Record for “Largest Guitar Ensemble”. 2008 saw 1,951 guitar players (electric, acoustic and bass) playing ”Hey Joe” and while “Hey Joe” will be on the song list again this year, with the participation of Steve Morse, the iconic guitar tune “Smoke on the Water” is being added to the repertoire.

GREEN ECHO FROM LONDON

Leslie Kot lives in Orebro, Sweden. He is a passionate, dedicated musician and writer. He is also my friend.

On this, his new album, he has put together a superbly tight group of musicians to play music that demonstrates their combined experience of the Blues, Jazz, Rock and Funk. The lyrics are written by Leslie in English, and express - in an often surreal way - observations on life as he sees and feels it.

These are not songs that you will find yourself singing, they are Leslie's and his alone, the voice wheezing and snarling, croaking and caressing the words - sometimes spoken, sometimes sung.

This guy and his band are unique and "Green Colour" gets better with each playing.

Listen and make up your own minds. Enjoy!
